Greeting Everyone,

Welcome to the 2022-23 AGSG’s new season! We hope this e-mail finds you and your family doing well and staying healthy.

There is much information that we need to share so get out your calendars and write some dates down. However, before we get into events, a very big thank you to Jim Clark and Tom Zmugg who will be stepping down from the Board. They both volunteered to serve on the Board during an important transition time and also helped make our 2022 fundraising event the success that it was ($57,665). It is members like Jim and Tom who are willing to invest their time to help our Veterans and their families that continue to inspire our mission. Please thank them both when you see them.

The Board and membership is also thankful and appreciative of Jim Angarella and Rob Daiker for volunteering to fill Jim and Toms positions on the Board for the 2022-23 season. Both Jim and Rob are very passionate about supporting our Veterans and have been appointed by the current Board members to fill Jim Clark and Tom Zmugg’s positions. We welcome both Jim and Rob to the Board and we are looking forward to working to make our AFSG Charter Club’s mission even more impactful!

Important Information

Flag Detail Team Volunteer

This special request is a unique opportunity to participate in an important and meaningful community project. They are looking for volunteers to help lower flags to half staff on special days/events.

There are 14 flag poles that need to be tended and the more people we have to volunteer, the easier the task will be for those involved. This is a CAM sponsored program with a volunteer coordinator.

Attached is a description of the Flag Detail. Please read the information and contact Denise Alessi, denise.alessi@scgcam.com, 623-546-7451. if you are interested in helping. The more volunteers they get, the easier it will be on other volunteers. I have already signed up and I am hopeful that other AFSG members will also join me.

Veteran Monument Update

The Village Design Team is finalizing the location and design of the Veterans Monument. A project over 11 years in the making! Actual construction may begin in Spring of 2023.The design that I have already shared with you in a past Newsletter is still the same. However, it will now be located on Sonoran Plaza side of Remington Dr.

City of Surprise Veterans Roundtable

AFSG Board members have been attending the City of Surprise Veterans Roundtable meeting. Below is information that we would like to share with our membership.

“Maricopa County has begun promoting a new website – LawForVeterans.org. Provided by AZLawHelp, it offers information on multiple topics, including local veterans courts, health benefits, housing and available resources.

Thank you,

Danielle Osborne

This is a new book on Joseph “Joe” Johnson’s amazing story of survival. AFSG member Tom Zmugg and Richard Shirley along with the SCG Armed Forces Support Group are listed as contributors.

One of the pictures in the book shows Joe signing our WW II Veterans Reception Poster! What an honor it was to have Joe participate in our many AFSG Veteran Events and thanks to Tom and Richard for all the support they gave to Joe.

On a final note, don’t forget to check out our AFSG web site: scgarmedforcessupportgroup.ORG
